Physicals Q & A

What happens during a physical exam?

Even if you never seem to get sick and don’t have any known medical conditions that run in your family, physical exams are still important. Physicals are your dedicated one-on-one time with Dr. Felzer to sit and talk about your health. You have the opportunity to ask questions about any concerns you have and get the information you need on how to prevent serious illness.

Dr. Felzer focuses on preventive health. This means that during physicals, not only is he going to sit and talk with you, but he’s also going to order testing and perform some evaluations to ensure you’re in good health. Your physical exam may include:

  • Cholesterol blood check
  • Urinalysis evaluation
  • Body weight composition
  • Complete blood count and chemistry profile
  • Check of vital signs
  • Complete physical exam
  • Blood pressure screening

If any of these tests, or any other screenings, seem out of the ordinary, Dr. Felzer may design a lifestyle change treatment plan to help you get your health back on track.

How often do I need a physical exam?

Physical exams are included one time per year as part of the concierge package at Premium Healthcare. If you need follow-up visits to manage a chronic condition or if you had abnormal results during your last physical, Dr. Felzer may want to see you more regularly, such as every 3-6 months or as often as once a month.

For example, if Dr. Felzer finds that your blood pressure has gradually risen over the past couple of years, he’s going to design a treatment plan that involves lifestyle changes you can make. He might want you to schedule a follow-up exam 2-4 times per year in that case, just to ensure your treatment plan is working for you.

How do I prepare for a physical exam?

Most physical exams are combined with preventive health exams, which are also once per year. Because these comprehensive visits can last anywhere from 45-90 minutes, plan accordingly so you can spend quality time with Dr. Felzer.

Occasionally, you need to fast before a physical exam if you’re having certain blood testing. If you know you need a cholesterol check, for example, Dr. Felzer may request that you have nothing by mouth — except water — for about eight hours before your blood draw. The team lets you know if this applies to you when you schedule your physical.

It’s also helpful to get copies of medical records from other providers. If you needed to be seen by a specialist or had to go to urgent care since the last time you saw Dr. Felzer, bring those records with you. That way, he can maintain all of your medical records under one roof and perform any screenings you may need.
