Diabetes Q & A
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is an umbrella term for conditions that affect how your body processes blood sugar, known as glucose. Normally, it’s the job of your pancreas to release insulin, a hormone. Insulin’s job is to open up cell walls and help cells absorb glucose for energy.
When your pancreas doesn’t produce insulin, though, glucose levels surge. This is known as Type 1 diabetes, or juvenile diabetes. Sometimes, having too much body fat makes your body resistant to the insulin your pancreas does release, or the organ just doesn’t produce enough insulin. In this case, you have Type 2 diabetes, which also leads to dangerously high glucose levels.
Does diabetes cause symptoms?
Yes, although the symptoms associated with diabetes aren’t always obvious. Common symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are similar, and include:
- Increased thirst and urination
- Fatigue and irritability
- Blurred vision
- Frequent infections
- Extreme hunger
If left untreated or poorly managed, diabetes can lead to irreversible damage in your kidneys, eyes, nerves, and heart. But you don’t have to learn to manage diabetes on your own. Dr. Felzer of Premium Healthcare offers customized diabetes management plans so you can live a long, healthy life.
How is diabetes treated?
While no cure exists for diabetes, Dr. Felzer spends time teaching you how to manage the condition, based on your needs and lifestyle. Stabilizing blood sugar levels and staying on top of your diabetes can include:
- Dietary and nutrition counseling
- Personalized exercise planning
- Insulin injections or a pump
- Diabetes medications
While Type 1 diabetes requires you to take insulin injections throughout the day, Type 2 diabetes doesn’t always require you to rely on insulin. Sometimes, Type 2 diabetes is manageable through lifestyle changes alone or, as a last resort, medications that help with glucose absorption or insulin function.
